What is Net-Zero Energy Housing?

The idea behind a Net Zero Energy House is that the house produces as much energy as it needs. To begin with, this is achieved by dramatically reducing home energy usage. In addition, with built-in renewable energy systems, the house can actually produce energy (in an amount that is equal to the amount being consumed). A Net Zero Energy House is not necessarily autonomous to the public grid – it’s not really considered a house that is “off-the-grid”.
