With energy efficiency being primary for all types of buildings, every effort made to reduce airflow on your home is worthy and makes economic sense. Home insulation, for example, can reduce your energy bills by up to 45%, and other benefits are there to be enjoyed for decades to come. Additional “save on energy practices” like the usage of energy-efficient gadgets and draft-proofing your home can further lower your monthly utility bills and serve as a stepping stone to the well-being of residents.

By doing these, we are not only saving money on energy bills but the environment as well. The daily increasing use of energy has a high impact on climate change and we can all do our part by following these tips. In this article, we will take a look at some tips on energy saving, to somewhat help Ontarian homeowners create a better understanding of energy efficiency and hopefully make them take action today.

Home Insulation

Home insulation is the gold standard of energy efficiency. As aforementioned, you can expect to save up to 45% on energy bills when insulation is added to your building. There are several insulation methods and each creates an effective air barrier that prevents heat flow. When insulation is added to your building walls, attic, basement, it can seal all gaps and cracks, making this way a more comfortable living, working, or storage space that also necessitates less energy for heating and cooling.

And insulation also serves as a sound barrier, insect and rodent repellent, fire retardant, and it can increase your property value by a whopping 3 up to 6%. What to know more about insulation? Well, keep in mind that different insulation methods deliver different R-Values. In short, R-Value is the standard that measures the performance of insulation material. The higher it is, the lower your energy bills will be.

With that said, spray foam can lower your electricity bills by up to 45% which is quite impressive when compared with fiberglass insulation (25%) and cellulose insulation (25 up to 30%). What you will also need to know is how to hire an insulation contractor. See, the installation process is key to enjoying the benefits of insulation for decades to come and if it is not completed successfully, you will more likely lose money rather than save. Before hiring a Toronto moving company and relocating, make sure to check if the new house has the insulation installed or not.

Energy Efficient Gadgets

Although energy-efficient gadgets are more expensive in the beginning and for some might also be cost-depriving, you can expect the initial investment to pay off with the passing of years by saving on energy. Understandably, energy-efficient gadgets use less energy for the same tasks without compromising the quality. Since heating and cooling “is to blame” for 60% of your electricity usage, a smart/programmable thermostat is where you can start.

You can further increase your energy preservation efforts by switching to LED light bulbs and using low-flow showerheads (more about them below). Other energy-efficient gadgets we recommend using are modern boilers (can avoid heat loss that escapes up the flue) and solar panels. You can significantly save on energy with the latter, but the installation and maintenance cost can be too much for the average homeowner. And to further guarantee the functionality of your home insulation, you can choose to install new and energy-efficient doors and windows.

Easy Practices to Save on Energy at Home

Use energy-efficient light bulbs

Switching your conventional light bulbs to LEDs can lower your monthly energy bills significantly and that can be an advantage in the long run. The old traditional incandescent light bulbs need anywhere from 25-80% more electricity than light-emitting diode bulbs (LEDs), Halogen incandescent bulbs, and compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). Although energy-saving light bulbs are more expensive, their longer lifespan and energy conservation will pay off.

Use natural light more

Use natural sunlight as much as you can. One south-facing window, for example, can illuminate anywhere from 20 up to 100 times its area. And during this time of the day, turning off one 60-watt bulb for 4 hours can save you up to $8 over a year.

Take shorter showers

Hot water is expensive. If a family of two would cut their shower time by 1 minute, they could save up to $40 a year on electricity. Switching to low-flow showerheads can also lower water consumption and eventually decrease water bills significantly.

Maintain your AC unit

For your air conditioner to run smoothly and efficiently, it needs to be maintained continuously. What you can do is swap out the old air filters with new ones every at least 90 days. You can also decrease its energy consumption significantly by removing anything that might be blocking the vents.

Turn off not in use electronics, appliances

Turn your appliances off standby mode and you can save up to $50 a year. Rest assured as many electronic devices (TVs, printers, computers, fax machines) can be plugged off without compromising their functionality.

Fix any leaky plumbing fitting

Leaky faucets can waste up to 11.000 liters of water each year. Fixing them can save you up to $40 a year.

Turn off the AC on your way out

That’s a no-brainer! Turning off your air conditioner when not needed can save on energy bills. In addition, a programmable thermostat can further help you lower energy use for heating and cooling.

Draft-proof your house

Last but not least, take a survey on your house perimeter and check for any drafts. You can apply weatherstrips for your doors and windows, re-caulk where necessary, and install new door sweeps.

Sustainable insulation is becoming more popular, which is excellent for both your budget and the environment. The manufacture of these insulation materials, which are also totally recyclable, requires less energy.

As modern homeowners, we want to make a long-term influence on the environment by upgrading and retrofitting our homes with ecologically friendly items. The advantages of environmentally friendly insulation are comparable to those of traditional insulation types, with the added benefit of being safer for the environment and your family.

The Advantages of Environmentally Friendly Insulation

Adding insulation to your home is the most effective approach to reduce your carbon footprint because the increased protection from the elements means you spend less energy to heat your home and keep your air conditioning running for longer. However, there are additional advantages to using eco-friendly insulation:

Materials that are safe and long-lasting:

Natural and sustainable are popular buzzwords in the consumer goods industry, and for good reason. One of the most significant advantages of eco-friendly insulation is that it contains fewer dangerous compounds, such as formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Most are less irritant to the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory tract, and many are made of recycled materials, diverting trash from landfills.

Lower Manufacturing Costs:

Embodied energy – the cost of producing anything – is quite high in some insulation materials, such as fiberglass, which can take up to 10 times as much energy to produce as cellulose insulation. In comparison, environmentally friendly materials such as cork, wool, or even shredded denim require minute amounts.

Savings on energy:

The main advantage of eco-friendly insulation is that it helps you be green in other ways because stronger insulation means you use less gas or fuel to run your furnace. Furthermore, green alternatives can deliver a significantly greater R-value per square inch!

Commercial Building Insulation Importance

Greater energy efficiency, lower energy bills

The value of energy efficiency is obvious: it saves building occupants money on energy bills while lowering CO2 emissions from power plants, hence lowering carbon footprints.

As energy expenses rise and the public becomes more aware of the carbon footprint, the benefits become increasingly important. More than a dozen major Canadian metro areas have enacted commercial and multifamily energy benchmarking standards in recent years, which means that existing buildings must report on annual energy use and obtain a score from 0-100 based on their efficiency.

These scores are frequently made public, and disclosure is essential for any real estate transaction, which might have an impact on prospective buyers and tenants. As energy efficiency becomes more important in building transactions, astute commercial building professionals will detect and profit from this trend by designing and constructing buildings that surpass regulations and distinguish themselves from the competition.

Meeting the comfort demands of the occupants

Thermal comfort is a significant factor in occupant happiness. Occupants are likely to be dissatisfied in a facility that is uncomfortable or has considerable temperature changes. Although insulation and air sealing are important factors in thermal comfort, meeting code is no guarantee of occupant satisfaction.

In fact, ASHRAE has a distinct standard for achieving occupant thermal comfort expectations: ASHRAE Standard 55-2013.

It is tempting to believe that more targeted heating and cooling control is the answer to satisfying tenants throughout a facility. However, without sufficient insulation and air sealing, heat will always migrate to cold places, requiring occupants to expend even more energy to remain comfortable.

Acoustic Influence

The body of studies proving the relationship between noise and workplace productivity and satisfaction is growing. According to a recent Cambridge Sound Management survey, 30 percent of office workers are distracted by their peers’ talks.

Similarly, according to another survey, 60% of employees report being more productive when the office is quiet. The issue of noise is becoming more prevalent as the trend toward more open workspaces, floating walls, and glass features increases.

Acoustic design is a highly complex process that is influenced by numerous building elements such as building type, location, and occupancy. Insulation may not be able to provide a quiet office on its own, but it should be incorporated into acoustic design and solutions. The acoustic qualities of various types of insulation should also be compared and assessed.

Sustainability and Responsibility

In 2015, an expected 40-48 percent of new non-residential construction would be “green,” and 13.8 billion square feet of building space is LEED-certified as of August 2015. What effect does this have on commercial building professionals? Lease rates for “green” areas might be up to 20% higher than the national average, resulting in high rental prices and lower vacancy rates.

Comparing and selecting insulation types is an important component of sustainable design, as it contributes to decreased energy use, improved indoor air quality, and increased comfort. Certain types of insulation can also help meet recycled content criteria while reducing GHG emissions.

Popular Green Insulation Types

Cellulose

This popular environmentally friendly insulating material is manufactured from recycled paper goods. Paper can emit dangerous greenhouse gases when it decomposes in a landfill. When recycled into insulation, cellulose is one of the most environmentally friendly options for anyone trying to decrease hazardous items in their house.

Fiberglass

Another popular insulation material comes in a variety of compositions and is most commonly employed blown-in or as batts. It is glass sand blown into fibrous strands, as the name implies, and creates an efficient insulation layer that will last for decades.

Sheep Wool

Nomads, pioneers, and people all around the world have used sheep’s wool for centuries to warm their bodies, cover tents, and insulate their homes – and it works! Sheep’s wool, which is fire, water, and mold resistant, provides an excellent home insulation material and is gaining favor among people looking for environmentally responsible solutions for their homes.

Wool evolved over generations to keep sheep warm, dry, and safe from the weather, and it is sometimes of little or no benefit to farmers in the commercial farming business, who must shear the animals every six months to keep them healthy. Wool, when used as insulation, can help eliminate the need to constantly regulate your indoor temperature, saving you both energy and money.

Insulating your cottage for winter, you can enjoy the best features of your cottage all year long. There’s no reason to abandon your rural retreat just because the temperature goes below freezing. Home insulation can make your cabin become a year-round getaway.

Keeping Your Summer Cottage Warm

Summer cottages typically have little insulation, and they don’t require it if they’re only used during the summer. When the temperature difference between inside and outside is only a few degrees and air circulation from open doors and windows are regular. The reasons for insulating, such as keeping moisture from gathering between walls, are rarely an issue.

When it comes to insulating your cottage for the winter, there are a few things to keep in mind. One is that you’ll need to install a vapour barrier, in January the temperature difference between your warm and cozy cottage and the freezing outdoors might be more than 30 degrees. Warm air can condense on the inside of the walls as a result of this discrepancy. Mold can build in the walls or attic due to moisture, which can be very troublesome.

Many contractors will recommend installing blown in or fiberglass batt insulation directly into the walls or attic when choosing an insulation solution for the cottage. Without the addition of a vapor barrier, it is also likely to produce dampness and mildew. A vapor barrier is an expensive add-on that can’t be installed without tearing down existing walls.

For your cottage, there’s a better option

Spray foam insulation is Eco Spray Insulation’s best choice for insulating your cottage for the winter. Spray foam is great because it serves as both insulation and a vapor barrier, keeping heat in while keeping moisture out. It has a high R-value, so it keeps heat in while keeping moisture out.

Spray foam is a liquid that expands into walls or between joists, and it may be applied without tearing down walls. When compared to other modifications, spray foam insulation can have one of the most significant cumulative benefits on your cottage energy bills. Performs an outstanding job of sealing the little fractures and air leaks that allow your heated air to leave.

The ideal spots to ensure effective air sealing while insulating your cabin for the winter are:

Under the rafters, to be precise.

The crawl space interior.

Within the confines of closed or empty wall cavities.

Around the perimeter of windows, doors, and vents.

Wires and plumbing pipelines should be avoided.

Between the studs of the wall.

Adding Insulation to the Attic

Your attic is one of the greatest places to insulate when properly installed. In the winter, attic insulation helps manage your indoor temperature by lowering your heating expenditures. New attic insulation will assist create a more stable indoor environment that keeps moisture and temperature balanced regardless of the season.

When it comes to insulating your cottage for the winter, the attic is a requirement, as it will help protect you from the elements while also lowering your energy consumption. Spray foam’s capacity to both insulate and seal air leaks is where it really excels. It will keep your cottage pleasant, avoiding air conditioner loss in the summer and retaining heat in the winter.

Upgrading your cabin and removing old insulation

Prior house insulation must be removed before you can begin insulating your cottage for the winter. Older types of insulation continue to deteriorate or underperform as they age, potentially affecting airflow or circulation in your cottage. Working with professionals on your cottage will improve your comfort and enjoyment; not only will the Eco Spray Insulation contractors ensure a clean and safe removal, but they will also inspect your cottage for any air leaks or damage that needs to be repaired.

While spray foam insulation gets a lot of attention at Eco Spray Insulation, there are two more types we install and suggest for insulating your cottage for the winter.

Blown in Insulation

Insulating attics, roof cavities, and exterior walls with this sort of insulation are simple and cost-effective. Fiberglass and cellulose are the most common materials used in blown-in fabrications. Both have a similar R-Value and can be used to increase the efficiency of existing insulation.

Blown in insulation is suitable since they do not attract pests and are fire-resistant. They, like anything else, require appropriate installation to guarantee that they perform to their full potential.

Fiberglass Batt Insulation

This well-liked product is suitable for both attics and walls. Fiberglass batt insulation can be utilized in the attic or in the walls, depending on the project. This non-combustible insulation helps to absorb moisture as well as sound.

This product is best installed by a professional when insulating your cottage for the winter, as an amateur install may result in poor performance and increased air leakage.

The Advantages of a Four-Season Cottage

Insulating your cottage will allow you and your family to enjoy your lakeside escape all year long. Also lowers your energy expenses, reduces air leakage, and stabilizes inside temperatures.

Different insulation solutions, as well as professional insulation installation and air sealing, will ensure that you are comfortable regardless of the season. Because of the age of many cottages and their often handcrafted construction methods, they frequently have insufficient air sealing and insulation.

Spray foam insulation is one of the best insulation materials for insulating your cottage for the winter, according to professional spray foam insulation contractors. It’s the ideal home installation since it serves as both a moisture barrier and a foam insulator, sealing the space, inhibiting moisture, and providing high R-Values. Insulating your cottage for the winter has benefits all year round.

Get in touch with our project manager and learn more details about spray foam insulation and how it can benefit your cottage.

Cool roofs made of white EPDM, TPO, or PVC can save energy in hot climates by reflecting more sunlight and absorbing less heat than darker-colored roofs. White membranes, on the other hand, may increase the risk of condensation forming in the roofing system.

The fundamental principles underlying condensation problems with white membranes – particularly in colder, northern climates – are well understood.

Warm, humid air migrates upward during cold weather and infiltrates the roofing assembly through gaps (wall-to-deck), unsealed joints (steel deck end laps), or around penetrations. When moisture in the humid air comes into contact with a surface temperature below the dew point, it begins to condensate.

This usually happens on the underside of the membrane and can give the appearance of mysterious leaks inside the building. If the vapor migration continues, the longer the surface remains below the dew point, the more condensation will collect.

Cathedral Ceiling

Cool roofs, due to their reflectivity, frequently fall below – and remain below – the dew point for longer periods of time than darker roofs. The same phenomenon that keeps the roof cool can also make it more prone to condensation and moisture drips, particularly in central and northern climates.

The condensation risk may be efficiently eliminated while the benefits of the cool roof are preserved by a single inch of SOPRA-SPF 202 Spray Polyurethane Foam Isolation (SPF), which is directly applied to the underside of the roof.

SOPRA-SPF 202 is a multifunctional construction material that provides three protection levels – thermal, air, and humidity. An R-value of 6.9 inches is one inch, air-impermeable, and a vapor retarder of class 2.

SOPRA-SPF 202 adapts to, attaches to, and expands on any surface, form, geometry, and fills the smallest crevices and gaps for a fully monolithic and flawless environmental barrier. SPF 202 may be combined to achieve specified insulation levels in a hybrid movement with an open-cell sprinkler or standard fiber insulation.

Dispose of Condensation With SPF

Many customers that use fiberglass insulation to insulate the cathedral ceiling have a few unique issues linked with the building of the ceiling.

Heat, humid inside air frequently escapes across the poly barrier and the battle insulation. After contact with the cold surface or cold air, condensation occurs. This condensation may cause battle isolation mold and other moisture issues to influence the underside of the roof, such as decay. Sprayed polyurethane foam supports neither mold nor mildew and simultaneously produces a moisture barrier.

The insulation is eliminated and 2 lb closed cell spray foam is applied in the living room of the house on the bottom of the roof deck that sticks out the warm, wet indoor air. The 2 lb foam is sprayed on the pivot ends, which also stick to the soffit and pivot end.

Is Your House Insulated?

In the winter is when we mostly notice highly utility bills, mold, damages etc. Without any doubt the house is the place that we have to take care the most. Because it is the place where we spend most of our time, that’s where we raise our children and it has to be as healthy as possible. Before winter strikes, there are plenty of areas to be checked by professionals in order to make sure that your house is in the right condition to handle winter.

Homeowners, in winter, will complain about cold floors and walls that are too cold to the touch. Also, there may be rooms where heating levels are uneven. Insulating the house will help you keep the desired temperature all year round. A well-insulated house is energy efficient and will need very little additional heating and cooling. In case your house has been insulated years ago, it might be a good idea to replace the old insulation with the new one before winter.

Old Insulation needs to be replaced

When you insulate your house, you may expect it to last a lifetime. But there are certain circumstances when you may need to replace portions of it or also add another layer on top of it. Sometimes, attic insulation is an afterthought when building a home and lack of or poor material could leave holes and openings for insects and animals to enter. Spray foam insulation prevents outside agents from entering your home because it fills all holes and crevices. Preventing and controlling the entrance of moisture, air and sounds will enhance the quality of life for residents as well as reduce home operating costs.

Here are five signs that your insulation needs replacing:

1- The Age of Your House
Sometimes insulation is an easy factor to be forgotten and mostly this is why older houses tend to have insufficient or damaged insulation. It may happen that some old types of insulation contain dangerous substances like asbestos. You should consider to re-insulate your house if it has been 20 years or more since your last insulation installation.

2- Water Damage
Everybody knows that water in the house always brings problems or damages, especially in the case of a long-time stand of water. It compresses and damages insulation making it inefficient and also is the key ingredient in mold growth too. In case that you are restoring the roof before winter, it’s also time to change your insulation.

3- High Utility Bills
An easy way to notice if your insulation is bad, is by your high utility bills. They are an incentive to get your insulation replaced as soon as possible. Because you are not only paying on your monthly bills but also you are wearing out your heater and AC units much faster than if the insulation was adequate.

4- Drafts
In case that your conditioned air is escaping your house, that means that there are drafts and air can also come into your house. This can cause your house to be drafty in some rooms and warmer in others. Adding adequate insulation often eliminates completely these problems.

5- Animal Infestation
Bats, insects and rodents can get into your attic or crawlspace and cause damage to your insulation. Rodents can cause damage to electrical wiring and also to drywall as well costing you hundreds of dollars to repair the damage. In order to make your house heating more efficient, the damaged insulation should be replaced.

Insulate Your Attic

Typically in an attic is installed Loose-fill or Batt insulation. Loose-fill insulation provides better coverage when installed properly and is less expensive to install than batt insulation. Attics and crawlspaces serve important functions in the overall livability of the house. If they are not maintained properly will end up costing more in the short and long term.

Insulating your attic will cut down on your energy costs but also will make your house more comfortable. Your house will be losing less heat and you will find yourself adjusting your thermostat less. Which means that less energy will be used up by your heater to keep you comfortable, as it won’t have to keep running as long or as often. Your utility bills not only will go down but also your heater will accumulate less usage-related damage, preventing any expensive repairs or maybe replacements that may have otherwise been in your future.

Insulate Your Garage

If you have insulated your garage but you still notice that the room above it is still colder than the others then it must be old insulation that has been damaged with time. If you haven’t insulated your garage yet then it is time to do so because the garage allows air seepage and heat to flow in and out throughout the year, cooling your house in winter and heating it in summer. Often the garage is one of the most neglected spaces in most houses and one of the reasons for this is that homeowners don’t consider it a room.

It is important to insulate in your garage the wall it shares with your house. Because that is the point where most of the heat transfer occurs between the garage and interior of your house. By insulating this wall you can start saving money right away by reducing the amount of time you need to run your air conditioner.

Benefits of Eco-Friendly Insulation

A new generation of eco-friendly insulation materials has arrived and homeowners nowadays are not looking to just make the usual renovations, but they also want to make choices which have a positive impact on the environment. Eco-friendly insulation products are the result of safe and sustainably used materials and methods during the manufacturing process. The energy required or embodied in the production of these materials is much lower than traditional methods of production. Raw materials used in the production are usually recyclable waste and the final products are recyclable as well. Eco-friendly insulation materials have similar benefits to the common insulation products, but they are much safer to use in the house and elsewhere, and so, much worth the interest they are receiving when it comes to green building or renovation projects.

Types of Eco-Friendly Insulation Materials

Cellulose: This is one of the most eco-friendly insulation materials you will be offered for your home insulation. The base material for the production of cellulose is made up to 85% of recycled paper and paper waste. You never thought you would insulate your home with “yesterday’s news” right? Well, this is what eco-friendly insulation is all about: turning waste into useful products with the least embodied energy possible. Recycled paper is then treated with borax or boric acid to make the final product more resistant to any potential fire. These flame retardant chemicals have also the benefit of keeping insects and mould growth away. The resistance value of cellulose insulation stands at R3.5 per inch, similar to fiberglass insulation. On the other hand, the percentage of the recycled content is higher in cellulose insulation while the energy required for the production process is the lowest among eco-friendly insulation products. Another factor with direct impact on the environment is the shipping distance of the products from the manufacturing location to the final consumer. Cellulose insulation is one of those materials which are locally produced, reducing the consumption of non-renewable energy sources and gas emissions in the atmosphere.

Fiberglass: As the name itself suggests, the base products for fiberglass insulation is glass or sand turned into fibrous strands. It is popular just like cellulose insulation and it comes in different compositions but it is commonly applied in the form of blown-in or as batt insulation. Fiberglass insulation is one of the cheapest insulation options in the market, but nevertheless, it will make a quite effective insulation layer that will endure for decades. Fiberglass insulation is considered eco-friendly material in that it incorporates considerable amounts of recycled glass in the production process. The percentage of recycled material used in the production of fiberglass insulation varies between different products and brands, but some of them contain up to 80% recycled glass. Manufacturers of fiberglass insulation used some 8 billion pounds of glass waste for the period 1992-2000, research shows. This huge amount of recycled glass waste for sure has had a positive impact on the environment. Another component used in the production of fiberglass is silica sand, a material which you can find in abundance and which is also a renewable source.

Spray Foam: Spray Foam insulation is considered environmentally friendly because of its high resistance value. At an R-value of R6.5 per inch, it has for sure the highest thermal-insulating properties and you don’t need too much of it to obtain adequate insulation. Studies show that some 40% of the energy is lost from homes through air leakages in the windows, doors, roofs, and walls. The high qualities of spray foam insulation will preserve the heat inside your home making it easier for you to control the indoor climate and cut your energy bills as a result. Recent developments in the industry have made it possible to produce eco-friendly spray foam insulation from soy or vegetable oil, bypassing this way other non-renewable resources used for the production such as petroleum. When planning to renovate your home through spray foam insulation, we suggest you choose a product that will have the least adverse impact on the environment.

Foam Board: Foam Board or Polystyrene is usually compared to Styrofoam. It comes in the form of hard and dense foam sheets, easily to install into roofs, floorings and walls, interior and exterior. It’s least positive side is the fact that it has to be cut into precise pieces in order to fit into uneven surfaces and shapes. Polystyrene is actually made of plastic, and though it might not be considered the most eco-friendly solution for your home insulation, it has a high resistance value which will preserve the energy of the home and cut down on your heating bills. Being hard and dense, it will also add to the structural strength of your home.

Advantages of Eco-Friendly Insulation

Insulating your home with eco-friendly materials is the best contribution you can give in reducing waste and lowering the carbon footprints in the atmosphere. Eco-friendly insulation products require low amounts of energy to be manufactured and delivered to the final consumer. They are recyclable materials themselves and their insulating powers help reduce energy consumption from non-renewable and non-green resources. We summarize here below the benefits of using eco-friendly insulating materials:

Sustainability

Eco-friendly insulation materials have the advantage of being sustainable and with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment. Environmental impacts of our daily choices have had a lot of publicity recently and it is our duty to move towards sustainable solutions. Insulation materials that are eco-friendly can cause little to no damage to the environment, starting from the manufacturing process up to their final disposal, if necessary.

Safety

Insulating your home with eco-friendly materials is completely safe and poses no risk to your general health. Moreover, eco-friendly insulation materials have demonstrated to be fire-proof or are treated chemically with fire retardants. Apart from fire-proofing qualities, they are safe to use in your home as they do not contain any toxic material.

Lower Manufacturing Costs

Some eco-friendly insulation materials such as cellulose require up to 10 times less embodied energy to be manufactured as compared to other traditional insulating materials. The embodied energy translates into manufacturing costs, which are significantly reduced when producing eco-friendly insulation. Lower production energy means also fewer harmful gases and pollutants released in the atmosphere.

Energy Savings

Eco-friendly materials that have high insulating powers will preserve the energy of your home. The higher the thermal resistance value, the easier it will be to control your indoor climate. When energy is preserved and not wasted, your HVAC system will work less, resulting in less gas and fuel consumption.

Breathability and Vapour Permeability

Eco-friendly insulation materials are made of natural fibres and as such they are highly effective in relation to ventilation and vapour permeation. The natural fibres of the eco-friendly materials regulate house breathability and humidity by absorbing the excess moisture and releasing it as needed. This is very important in the long run for the comfort of your home, as excess moisture can lead to mould growth.

Health Benefits

As we earlier mentioned, eco-friendly insulation materials do not contain any toxic material and are safe for your general health. But the most important health benefit is related to their breathability and ventilation qualities. Eco-friendly materials have the ability to control the moisture of your indoor environment, combating excess moisture build up and condensation. Eco-friendly insulation is not the perfect environment for mould and mildew to flourish, and so they add up to the quality of your indoor air.

Insulation That Lasts a Lifetime

Unlike the traditional old forms of insulation, eco-friendly insulation materials are built to resist for a long time the different external environmental factors. Despite the harsh weather outside, if you upgrade to eco-friendly insulation you will create for yourself a cozy and comfortable living place inside. These materials are made to last, so if you use eco-friendly insulation, you need not worry about replacing them, not even in the long future.

Go Green with your Home Insulation

You as customers and we as eco-friendly insulation experts have the power to affect the range of products and services available to us. Choosing eco-friendly products and services will minimize our impact on the environment. The benefits of eco-friendly insulation materials exceed in many ways those of old traditional materials and so will offer us new ways of making positive changes for the wellbeing of our families and the environment. But eco-friendly insulation requires certified experts to showcase all the benefits it has to offer. Insulation that is not properly installed will require additional servicing, later on, resulting in additional charges and unnecessary loss of time. If eco-friendly insulation appeals to you, call us at (416) 860-6664 or send us an e-mail at info@ecosprayinsulation.ca for a free and no-obligation consultation and quote.

Understanding the spray foam products and the installation makes it easier to decide better for your project. Spray foam insulation has been people’s first choice for long-term energy savings and for the comfort of their homes. Below our experts have listed some of the most frequently asked questions.

Q. What Is Spray Foam Insulation?

A. Spray Foam is a mixture of two chemical ingredients, isocyanate, and polyol resin, which when combined together form an expanding foam. Within less than 10 seconds after spraying, the liquid mixture expands 30-100 times of the original volume and hardens to form a solid isolating barrier.

Q. What does Spray Foam Insulation really do?

A. Spray Foam insulation provides thermal and acoustical barriers, helping to improve your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. The ability of the spray foam to expand during application makes possible closing of small cracks and openings, isolating the building from air and sound infiltrations. When closed cell insulation is used, the newly formed barrier will also add to the strength of the building structure.

Q. Where Should Spray Foam Be Installed?

A. Spray Foam can be installed on any clean surface that is dry, free of grease, oils or anything else that could complicate the solidifying process. When considering insulation, the first to come in mind are the attic and the outside walls, but other areas of a building structure as per below require as much insulation:

Any flat roof, cathedral ceiling, overhang and garage ceiling

Side and sloped walls of attics used as living spaces

Any interior wall, ceiling and floor where extra sound barrier is required

Band, joist pockets, pipes

Basement side walls and ceiling

Q. How Much Spray Foam Should Be Installed?

A. The spray foam thickness depends on where it will be applied and on the purpose of the insulation. Generally speaking, for closed cell insulation we recommend 5 inches for flat roofs, ceilings, and overhangs, 3 inches for basement walls, and 4 inches for upper floors’ outside walls. For open cell spray foam, we usually recommend 3 inches of insulation.

Q. What Is the R-Value and how do I figure it out?

A. The R-Value indicates the resistance of the insulation to conductive heat flow. A denser material has a higher R-value and as a consequence, more insulating power. Closed cell spray foam has an R-value between R-6.0 – 7.0 /inch of thickness. This means that if you put 4 inches of closed cell insulation to your outside walls, you reach a thermal resistance value of R-24 ( 4” x R-6.0 = R-24). Open cell insulation on the other hand is less dense and its thermal resistance value stands at around R3.7 / inch of thickness.

Q. Should I use Open Cell or Closed Cell for my home?

A. The answer to this question depends on several factors. Closed cell spray foam will offer a higher R-Value to your insulation, but if you are more interested in the insulation to act as a sound barrier as well, then Open Cell is the right for you. Closed cell insulation is more solid and can improve the stability of a building. The table below shows the different properties for each type of spray foam application:

Spray Foam

Closed Cell

Open Cell

R-Value per inch:

R-6.0 – 7.0 /inch

R-3.7/inch

Water permeable:

No

Yes

Min. Thickness to block air:

1”

3”

Used for sound proofing:

Sometimes

Yes

Difference between Closed Cell and Open Cell Spray Foam

Q. Is Spray Foam Safe? Should I access the house right after Spray Foam Insulation?

A. Spray Foam in itself is a very safe product for your home or industrial building if installed properly by the insulation company. However, during the process of spray foam insulation, there can be generated fumes and mists that can be hazardous for the health of the homeowners and other trade members working on site. For this reason, it is recommended that the work area be vacated during and after 24 hours of spray foam application and access to the site be limited to technicians wearing adequate personal protective equipment.

Q. How much will I save on my utility bills by insulating my home?

A. It is well proven that a properly insulated home will act as a barrier to conductive heat flow, preserve the indoor climate, and lower the pressure on your HVAC system. Lots of our customers have reported savings on their monthly energy bills of between 15 to 50%. However, there are extra factors that will determine the amount of energy you will consume such as the climate of your location, the construction shape and size, the HVAC system, and the type of fuel in use, as well as the living habits of the homeowner.

Q. Can insulation help reduce unwanted sound?

A. In addition to blocking outside air and pollutants entering the house, insulation also blocks unwanted sounds, creating a quieter and more comfortable home environment. Good insulation will also reduce the transmission of sounds and noises in between floors and walls of the same building. Our experts at Eco Spray Insulation will help you choose the proper insulation type that answers your needs for home insulation.

Q. What is the Average Cost of Spray Foam Insulation?

A. Spray Foam products are in general more costly, but at the same time much more effective at providing high isolating properties than other traditional materials. However, the number one factor to consider when planning the costs for home insulation is the square footage of the building. Another factor to consider when planning for insulation is the difficulty of the job. Most of the houses have a very regular shape, making the Spray Foam application process very easy, but other homes with a more complex layout can prove to be more difficult to insulate.

Q. Can I Add Spray Foam Insulation Myself?

A. Many more people nowadays are wondering if they can install themselves the spray foam insulation, following the “Do It Yourself” home improvements culture. Although practically it wouldn’t be impossible, the real concerns on our side would address the quality of the spray foam application process, which in turn would compromise the insulating properties and can result in additional costs.

Q. Can I Install Spray Foam Insulation Without Removing the Drywall?

A. Spray Foam insulation can be added to existing walls, but for a better application process, it is recommended that drywalls be initially removed. The expanding ability of the initially liquid material would put pressure on the inside of the drywall, resulting in cracks and breaks of the latter.

Q. Does Spray Foam Insulation Emit Odours?

A. Some spray foam materials may retain a noticeable odour lasting various days after the application process. This is not an indication of hazardous materials and proper ventilation of the insulated area for a few days would minimize to zero these odours. If the odours are persistent for longer periods, this might be a consequence of poorly installed spray foam.

Q. Will insulating my home raise the resale value of my home?

A. The short answer is “Yes”. More and more homeowners are using their utility bills to prove the energy efficiency of the building, and so prove a strong selling point for potential buyers. A well-insulated home is environmentally safe, high resistant to heat flow and so it would be considered a good investment for the future.

Why Insulate?

Since energy costs rise over time, the insulation you add to your home today will save you even more in the years ahead, both through greater resale value and through lower energy bills. Your family will enjoy a more inviting and comfortable living environment and who can put a price on that?

The benefits of insulating are many, a typical house loses up to 45% of its heat through the attic. Installing the recommended level of insulation in your attic can significantly reduce the amount of energy it takes to cool and warm your home. Of course lower monthly energy bills make your house more attractive to buyers.

Why Do Customers Continue to Choose Us?

Higher R-Value insulation

Environmentally safe and friendly products

Lower utility bills for years to come

Healthier, improved air quality

Proven process that maximizes comfort

Efficient services

What exactly is Spray Foam Insulation and why should I choose it over other insulation types?

Is your attic too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer? And does your HVAC system struggle to keep up with the outside temperature? As a spray foam insulation company, Eco Spray Insulation understands that choosing insulation for your home can be a daunting prospect, but nearly a decade of experience in installing spray foam insulation has shown us that our product is one of the best options for you, offering superior insulating capability and a host of other benefits as well.

Spray foam is one of the most well-known materials used for insulating residential and commercial buildings. The primary reason for its superiority over other insulation products are his air sealing properties. Your attic is your largest opportunity to save energy and to improve comfort in your house. You can stop many major air leaks and help maintain the desired temperature throughout your home by air sealing your attic with spray foam. There are dozens of holes around your plumbing, recessed lights and electric lights. Actually, there are so many holes that when added together, they equal the size of an open door that allows the outside air to come in. If you have duct work in your attic, insulating your roof system with spray foam insulation eliminates heat loss or gain through leaky ducts.

Eco Spray Insulation has hired an experienced staff and provides ongoing training to its technicians so our product is applied smoothly and safely, making sure that the curves and corners of your house are evenly coated.

Types of Spray Foam Insulation

There are types of spray foam insulation used in residential and commercial applications – open cell and closed cell. With open cell spray foam insulation, the foam is composed of tiny cells that aren’t closed all the way, thus creating a sponge-like appearance. Open cell spray foam insulation is useful as an air barrier, it doesn’t block water vapor and only gets used in interior wall applications, outside applications are not recommended for this type of insulation. Closed cell spray foam insulation is much denser than the alternative, retaining the ability to block water vapor and serving as a better air barrier. Closed cell spray foam is more expensive than open cell, it can be used anywhere in the house and it is most commonly utilized in roofing/outdoor applications.

Spray foam insulation as with anything else, comes with a set of pros and cons, which are:

PROS

Moisture Protection – Closed cell spray foam insulation when it is utilized to its fullest extent, helps to prevent moisture from overcoming a space. Which means that mold and mildew instances will be reduced and can improve indoor air quality.

Reduced Energy Costs – We all know that proper insulation can help to reduce energy costs within a house or commercial setting to a large degree. Spray foam insulation, when used effectively can help to keep utility bills low and prevent costly overutilization of energy.

Lessened Noise – Spray foam insulation can help to reduce noise within a house, which can help to make for a more comfortable living environment.

CONS

Health Effects – Spray foam insulation contains chemicals and that can be irritating to those who are sensitive, it can sometimes cause adverse health effects over time. But this can be prevented through proper installation and by taking the whole house into consideration as a connected system during the design process.

Pricing – Spray foam insulation can be more expensive than conventional forms of insulation, so it can be difficult to afford for those who are on a tight budget but well worth the investment.

Expansion Damage – Spray foam insulation, in some cases, can expand after being installed, which means that damage can occur to walls in the areas it is sprayed. With proper installation techniques by a certified spray foam specialist, this too can be avoided.
